Facts About Depression

Learning about depression requires some understanding of what it isn't. Understanding the true facts about depression is important, as many people incorrectly believe they may be suffering from anxiety and depression after experiencing a period of sadness or grief. It is natural for individuals to go through periods of sadness or 'feeling blue' at times throughout life. These periods of sadness are not usually symptomatic of depression.

Those suffering from depression experience these feelings of sadness, and/or a lack of interest in life's activities for a long period of time. Often, the feelings have no apparent cause, yet remain for extended periods of time. Even those individuals for whom life is going well, and have every reason to be happy, find themselves continually feeling down, blue and without interest in life in general.

Depression affects people differently. Many people suffering from depression exhibit different symptoms than others, and all of the accepted symptoms that present with depression do not have to be present for a diagnosis.

Depression can be brought on by a traumatic or major life event, such as job loss or divorce. Although it is quite natural to feel depressed after a major, negative experience, the feelings tend to continue unabated for a long period of time.

Depression Symptoms can include all or several of the following:

1) Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness

2) Interrupted sleep patterns

3) Changes in appetite

4) Loss of interest in daily activities

5) Loss of energy

6) Difficulty concentrating

7) Self-loathing

8) Irritability
